Malaysian postgraduate students sometimes use “theoretical framework” and “analytical framework” interchangeably, but experienced examiners distinguish between them and may ask about each separately. A theoretical framework provides the theoretical concepts and propositions that explain the phenomenon being studied. An analytical framework specifies the specific tools, categories, or procedures used to analyse the data in light of that theory. Your analytical framework operationalises your theoretical framework — it is how you take the theory into your data rather than simply applying it as a backdrop.
Being asked about your analytical framework in the viva is most common in qualitative research, where the framework used to organise, code, and interpret data is a significant methodological choice. Examiners ask about it to verify that your analysis was systematic and theory-guided rather than impressionistic or post-hoc.
What to Prepare About Your Analytical Framework
For qualitative research, your analytical framework is the structure you used to approach the data — whether that is a set of a priori codes derived from the theoretical framework, a thematic analysis structure derived inductively from the data, or a narrative or discourse analytical approach. Prepare to describe: what categories, codes, or dimensions you used to organise the data initially, how those categories were derived (from theory, from prior literature, from inductive reading of the data, or from some combination), and how the analysis moved from initial categories to final themes or interpretations.
For quantitative research, the analytical framework is the set of statistical models and relationships being tested — the specific structure of variables and hypothesised relationships that guided your statistical analysis. Prepare to describe the analytical model clearly: which variables are independent, dependent, mediating, or moderating, and how these relationships were tested.
Connecting the Analytical Framework to the Findings
The most compelling viva responses about analytical frameworks show direct connections between the framework and the findings it produced. “My analytical framework drew on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which led me to code data at four levels — individual, family, institutional, and policy.
