Why Statistical Data Needs Citation Just Like Other Sources
When Malaysian postgraduate students learn about academic citation, the examples used almost always involve citing journal articles, books, or reports. What is less often discussed is that statistics and numerical data — percentage figures, rates, totals, averages — also require citation when they come from a source other than your own research. Citing statistics and numerical data in your thesis correctly is important both for academic integrity and for the practical reason that readers who want to verify a statistical claim, or understand its context, need to know where it came from. A thesis that presents statistics without citation presents claims without evidence.
The citation rules for statistics follow the same APA 7th conventions that apply to other information — the source of the statistic is cited using the author-date format — but there are specific considerations for how to present statistics accurately and how to handle different types of statistical sources that are worth understanding in detail.
Citing Government and Official Statistics
The most commonly cited statistical data in Malaysian postgraduate theses comes from government agencies and official bodies — the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the Ministry of Higher Education, Bank Negara Malaysia, or international bodies like UNESCO and the World Bank. When you cite a specific statistic from any of these sources, treat it like any other information: include an in-text citation with the agency name and the year the data was published.
“Postgraduate enrolment at Malaysian public universities increased by 15 percent between 2019 and 2023 (Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2024)” is correctly cited — the reader knows the source of the figure and the year. “Postgraduate enrolment has increased significantly in recent years” is unsupported — the claim is present but the evidence is not. Even when a statistic feels so commonly known that it seems self-evident, if you did not calculate it yourself, it needs a citation.
When citing statistics from database portals — the World Bank Open Data, the IMF Data Portal, or the DOSM’s data portal — include the URL of the specific dataset or indicator as well as the year of the data, since the same portal may contain data from multiple years. Be specific about which year’s data you are using, particularly when the data changes annually.
Citing Statistics From Journal Articles and Research Reports
Statistics that appear in journal articles, research reports, or academic books are cited in exactly the same way as any other information from those sources: (Author, Year). If you are citing a specific statistic from page 45 of an article, include the page number for clarity: (Ali, 2022, p. 45). This is especially important when the statistic is a specific finding of the study rather than general background data — the page number helps readers locate the exact table or result you are referencing.
A common mistake in Malaysian theses is citing the agency or body that originally collected data when the student actually accessed that statistic through a secondary source — a journal article or report that cited the original data. If you read Ali (2022) and Ali cites a DOSM statistic, you should either locate and cite the original DOSM source directly, or use the secondary citation format: (Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2021, as cited in Ali, 2022). Do not cite the DOSM directly as if you consulted the original dataset when you did not — this misrepresents your source engagement.
Presenting Statistical Claims With Appropriate Precision
Beyond the citation itself, citing statistics and numerical data in your thesis requires presenting the figures with appropriate precision and context. A percentage figure without a denominator is often meaningless: “25 percent of participants agreed” is informative only if the reader knows that “participants” means 120 people. A mean without a standard deviation gives no sense of variability. A growth rate without a baseline period or a comparison point is hard to evaluate.
When presenting statistics in your thesis text, include the context that makes the figure meaningful. “The postgraduate enrolment rate increased by 15 percent” is improved as “Postgraduate enrolment at Malaysian public universities grew from approximately 210,000 in 2019 to 241,500 in 2023, representing a 15 percent increase over four years (Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2024).” The longer version includes the baseline, the endpoint, the period, and the percentage — all the information needed to evaluate the claim.
Using Statistics From Multiple Sources for the Same Claim
Sometimes the same statistical claim can be supported by multiple sources — different agencies or studies that have each measured something similar and produced comparable figures. When this is the case, citing both sources strengthens your claim and demonstrates that the figure is not dependent on a single source. “(Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, 2023; UNESCO Institute for Statistics, 2023)” as a joint citation signals that the statistic has been confirmed by independent sources, which is a stronger evidential basis than a single source alone.
Be careful, however, about citing multiple sources for a figure when the sources actually measured slightly different things — different populations, different time periods, different definitions. Citing two sources that produce compatible-looking figures for genuinely different constructs gives a false impression of convergent evidence. Check that sources cited together for the same statistical claim are actually measuring the same phenomenon in comparable ways before treating them as jointly supporting evidence. This kind of source-critical attention to statistical claims is one of the marks of sophisticated scholarship that examiners in Malaysian postgraduate research appreciate and look for.
