What Redundant Phrases Are and Why They Accumulate

Redundant phrases are expressions that contain more words than necessary to convey their meaning — where one word does the job of two or three. “Past history” is redundant because history is by definition in the past. “Future plans” is redundant because plans are by definition for the future. “Completely finished” says the same thing twice. These constructions feel natural in speech, which is why they accumulate so readily in written drafts. Proofreading your thesis for redundant phrases removes verbal clutter that dilutes the precision and authority of your academic writing without adding any meaning.

Common Redundant Phrases in Malaysian Thesis Writing

Several redundant phrases appear with particular frequency in Malaysian postgraduate theses. “End result” — a result is always an end. “Basic fundamentals” — fundamentals are by definition basic. “Added bonus” — a bonus is something added. “Completely unique” — something is either unique or it is not. “Close proximity” — proximity means closeness. “The reason why is because” — “the reason is” or “because” is sufficient. “In the field of education” where “in education” says the same thing more efficiently. “Due to the fact that” where “because” does the same work in a fraction of the words.

In academic writing, a category of construction that deserves particular attention is the filler phrase that precedes an actual claim: “It is important to note that”, “It is worth mentioning that”, “It should be pointed out that”, “Needless to say”. Each of these delays the actual claim by a sentence fragment that adds no information. Remove them and begin the sentence with the claim itself.

Using Find to Locate and Remove Redundancies

Build a short list of the redundant phrases you know you use and search for each one during proofreading. For “due to the fact that”, find every instance and replace with “because”. For “in order to”, find and replace with “to”. For “at this point in time”, replace with “now” or “currently”. For “in the event that”, replace with “if”. These searches take minutes and produce a thesis that is more direct and more authoritative because every word is earning its place.

The most impactful redundancy removal in Malaysian theses is the elimination of filler openers. Search for “It is important to note” and delete the filler — what follows is the actual claim and should stand on its own. Search for “It should be pointed out that” and do the same. After removing these openers across the thesis, read the affected sentences — they are almost always stronger without the filler than with it. Removing redundant phrases is one of the fastest proofreading interventions that produces the most immediate improvement in the directness and authority of academic writing.
